The Wave

Spencer has what I would call a "manly wave". Whereas a woman might raise her arm in the air and shake it around a bit or flap her fingers up and down, Spencer will simply raise his arm with fingers outstretched in the number 5 position and hold it perfectly still for a few seconds. He does this most often while driving and thanking another person for letting him into their lane or whatever. Easton has picked up on this and adopted the motion as his own. He likes to wave at people at the grocery when he is in the shopping cart or wave at passing cars while he sits on the front porch. About 80% of the time people will wave back to him and this delights him to no end.

The other day we were playing on our nifty new driveway with Emma (the little girl who stays with her grandma that lives across the street). Easton and Emma were both riding their bikes up and down the hill. Repeatedly, Easton would wave at Emma as he passed her and she would never return the wave. He was beginning to get very upset. As Easton came to me to complain, I also heard Emma talking to her Grandmother next to me. The conversations went something like this:

Easton to Mom: "I keep saying, 'hi' but Emma won't wave back to me!"

An equally upset Emma to her grandmother: "Grandma, Easton keeps putting his hand out and telling me to stop!"

Today, I started teaching Easton how to shake his arm around a little when he waves.
