My favorite student
One of the days before school started I was cleaning out the bandroom and piano lab and trying to move a filing cabinet from one room to the other. I spotted someone with a dolly and asked if I could use it when he was done. The guy offered to come help and basically ended up moving it for me although I offered what muscle I had. It turns out that he is one of the security guards at Doss and was there helping everyone move things around. I noticed his coffee cup said "Leonard" (because I figured I should at least carry his coffee cup while he pushed my huge filing cabinet on the dolly down a long hallway) and we got to talking. Turns out, his name is not Leonard (also my dad's name), but found the coffee cup somewhere and liked it so he uses it despite the name. When I told him that I taught band, he said, "I've always wanted to play an instrument." I asked which one and he said, "piano". Half jokingly, I told him he was in luck because I also taught piano and he could come sit it on the class any time he wanted. Do you know that he showed up today? Marched himself to the back of the class and did everything I asked the students to do. He even filled out a worksheet on the Grand Staff! At the end of class he asked if he could take the book home to practice for tomorrow. So it looks like I'm teaching the security guy how to play piano. It's a shame I don't have any discipline problems in there....
