Buddy the Bat
Buddy the Bat is the mascot for the Louisville Bats Baseball team. Easton went to his first baseball game with Spencer last year and they were giving out Buddy the Bat lunchboxes to all of the kids. From that point forward, Easton loved Buddy. I tried several times to get him a Spiderman lunchbox, or maybe Diego. No.....He loves Buddy. Since that first game, Easton has been back to see the Bats a few more times. Each time his love for Buddy grows. Recently I found out that Buddy the Bat is a graduate from Doss (where I teach) and he does work as a substitute in the building. Cool! Mom knows Buddy! We talk about Buddy. What does he eat? Where does he sleep? Why is he purple?
Tonight we were eating at Fazoli's for dinner. They have 99 cent kid meals on Tuesday you know. All of a sudden Spencer said, "EASTON! Come quick! I have a surprise for you!" As Easton scrambles to get out of his seat I look around to see what my husband is up to. As I'm looking around, the world starts to come to an end. From out of nowhere there is SCREAMING and yelling. Panic filled hysteria. People all over the restaurant stop eating and turn their heads to find out what terrible tragedy has occurred. Easton has seen Buddy. He's there at Fazoli's on 99 cent kid night. My child is SCREAMING like someone is sawing his leg off with a butter knife except that he is RUNNING like a wild child through the restaurant to get away from Buddy. At one point I think he tried to climb under a table where other people were sitting. Finally he makes it back to me where everyone is watching this poor little boy yell, "NO! NO! MAKE HIM GO AWAY! NO! NO!" I guess Buddy wasn't paying attention or didn't get the message because moments later he tries to make a pass by our table. And.....it starts all over again. I'm trying here, but I honestly cannot describe the hysteria and the sheer volume that my son put forth. This time Buddy got it and went away. Easton kept one eye on him the remainder of the dinner. He watched Buddy's every move and got antsy any time he got within 20 yards of us.
Tonight he says, "Maybe we can go see Buddy the Bat next time at the baseball game?"

i was there. i can verify that this story does no justice to the sheer terror on that boy's face, though it's a great attempt. it was hilarious and utterly pitiful at the same time. the best part was when the table of older ladies and gentlemen sat down next to us and kim (who had brought her toddlers along also) whispered to me, "they have no IDEA what they're in for sitting that close to us." i don't think we did either!
i'm glad he's still fond of buddy after all that. although i don't think i'll get him a stuffed buddy for christmas.
Yeah. That rated a "WOW" on the child-terror scale. Poor Easton!
Poor Easton! You know, I see this with kids when they see Santa, Easter Bunner, Mickey Mouse, etc. I really don't blame them when you think about it......what if an odd looking creature that was over twice our size came up to us out of the blue?! I think Easton needs to stay clear of hand puppets (the one he didn't like a while back), firefighters and now Buddy the Bat.
The fact that he mentioned going to see him at the next ball game is just wild to me!
Prime reason we are NEVER to go to Chick-fil-a on Thursday nights. It is kids night, and the cow comes...no can do. We hate ALL mascots or folks dressed up - clowns, etc. I really do not see a trip to Disney in our future any time soon, at least not with Sarah ;-)
