Snow Day part 2
You can't have a snow day without trying to make a snow man, can you? That dream was quickly squashed as soon as we walked outside. It snowed most of the evening yesterday but turned to freezing rain sometime last night. So we ended up with a large sheet of ice on top of the pretty snow. Not very good for snowmen. Here we are bundled up and ready to play. Ice does make the trees look pretty, though.
My man shoveling the driveway.
Camille holding her "snowball". (aka, big chunk of ice) Since this is her first snow experience she now thinks that snowballs go "crash!" and break into chunks when you throw them. The worried face is because she's telling me her hands are cold. The ice was melting through her sock-gloves and she didn't like that.

Did we ever fix snow cream for you when you were a child? They say that with all the pollutants in the air it is probably not safe. I remember when I was a kid, snow cream was about the only thing that made a snow day tolerable.
Basic Recipe
1 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
scant 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
large bowl of snow (about 3 quarts)
Blend milk, sugar and vanilla. Stir in enough snow to make snow cream to
an ice cream consistency.
I remember doing that several times. In fact, I remember making the way you described but I also remember Mom mixing the snow with a little Eagle Brand Milk. If the snow hadn't turned to ice we should have tried that. I'm not worried about pollutants - I worry more about the random grape that Camille finds under the table and deems edible before I can stop her.
Jenny - About the baggies...my mom did that to us when I was growing up. I say "did that to us" because I was totally embarrassed by it. It makes sense now, to not get snow and ice inside their shoes and freeze their little feet. I was disappointed to have to "do that" to Lucy. She has the cutest little purple snow boots (which were Ella's), but with two pair of socks and footed pajamas, they wouldn't fit on her feet! Grrrr. Jeff wasn't so sure about the baggies...he thought it looked too dangerous and that they might be slippery. Nobody fell and everyone had dry feet. Works for me! Glad you liked the idea.
