Lunch Diaries

I've had some grocery store drama in my life lately. (I know - this is the worst problem I can come up with? Poor me.) I am torn between wanting to try fresh, fun, new foods and staying within a reasonable budget. I love the idea of buying everything at Whole Foods, but really - I cannot afford them. So...I've shopped around enough to know what foods I can buy at what store and how to do it in such a way that I'm not shopping at 3 different stores every week. 75% of our food still comes from Kroger. Good Ole Kroger. Laura's Lean and much of their Private Selection stuff is just good and can't be beat. Produce comes from Meijer. Close to my house and their selection of fresh things beats every other store. And for fun, I go to Whole Foods for the 2% that I can't get anywhere else. Their homemade salad dressings are amazing. I also love their homemade pico de gallo and I can get granola, steel cut oats and other grains from their bins at a great price. (believe it or not, the prices for those things are a deal!)

So today I'm bopping through Whole Foods with my handful of fun things and I pass by the deli section. I don't know why - but this dish catches my eye. I'm hungry so I figure I'll get a cup or so of it and try it for lunch. Why not?

And now...I'm in love. With wheat berry salad. Honestly, I'm not even sure what a wheat berry is (I think it's a grain that hasn't been hulled yet) but it is SO GOOD. Light. Fresh. Filling. Yummy.

The version I got was the Greek Wheat Berry Salad. It had wheat berries, cucumber, tomato, red onion, feta, pine nuts, olive oil, lemon juice, basil and oregeno. I am making this soon! Like, I may be going back tomorrow to buy these mysterious berries and cook them up for dinner.

The picture below is of a Waldorf version I found online. (again, camera issues. maybe i'll be able to fix it soon)

Yes. I have lost my mind.

If you really want to be thrown for a loop with the whole "want to fix better, more fun, fancier, yet not too expensive food" challenge, you need to watch the documentary, "Food, Inc." Oh my. Has definitely gotten the wheels in my brain turning. It's on Netflix, if you do that. If not, I think PBS is actually showing it sometime this week.

Yes!! Michael Pollan! I saw an interview he gave and haven't been the same since. I've read two of his books. I will look for it on PBS - thanks!
