He's a clapper no more

Last night Spencer and I had a "date night". Okay fine - We left the house with one child, leaving the other two with a teenager while we went to a shoe store.

A shoe store you ask? Not just any shoe store. We went to Ken Combs Running Store. And not for me. For Spencer.

My husband is now a runner. Next thing you know he'll be riding roller coasters and swimming in the ocean and assembling basketball goals without help from Matt or Will. (just kidding guys, you know you're coming over to put that thing together)

It started off innocently. He wanted to get in a little exercise and started walking in the mornings. A walk led to a jog which led to a mile of running and all of a sudden he hit a groove and realized that running wasn't as horrible as he thought it was.

This is exciting to me for many different reasons. Number one - this means I don't have to learn to play tennis. I've always hoped that we would be able to do some sort of activity together and golf is NOT the answer. Tennis was a possibility. I tried a few times but it would take a long time for me to get good enough to play a real game with him. Number two - this gives me instant motivation to keep running myself. I haven't run for real since Easton was born. And I haven't run at all since Camille was born. But this past week I've crept back into it and it feels really good.

So last night we both got a new pair of running shoes. The poor lady at the store almost passed out when Spencer told her he'd been running in his mowing shoes. Our anniversary is in a few weeks so I guess this is our present to ourselves. If you are in our neighborhood between 6 and 7am this summer (we take turns) you will Spencer or myself running around sporting these stylish shoes:

Jenny - Saucony ProGrid Guide

Spencer - Nike Air Zoom Structure

We've already looked at some local 5K races in the next month or so to do together. Spencer doesn't know it yet but I'm also plotting for us to do the Triple Crown of Running next Spring.

I know that Spencer is way too kind to say this so I will say it for him. "Golf is a sport that husbands and wives should NEVER play together."

Running is a good choice. Maybe you can get one of those cute little jogging strollers for Claire.

I wish I could get motivated enough to go running. If I had a treadmill I would run all day. I know wierd huh. Leonard I agree with you 100%.

Spencer...watch out! The last two times that Jen has started to train for long distant running, she got pregnant. We must have missed that part of the schooling. Don't say you weren't warned!

Scott and I were running together in Huntsville, and then I got pregnant. So it is not just you. We tried for many years. I guess running just tilts the uterus just the right angle for a little baby. So we were looking at the 5 K during the Houston Marathon, but the first trimester is not the time you want to or feel like running. The Houston Marathon is in January every year, so maybe this January we will be ready for the 5 K. Then we will see if baby #2 comes along. :)
