Jump on it
Or - why I love my job.
It's pep band music time at Doss. Louie, Louie. Devil with the Blue Dress. Hey Song. We Will Rock You....
Today we're pepping away and my drumline starts messing around during a break. And a flash of recognition crosses their little faces and the whole band starts going nuts. It seems my tenor player has come across a familiar beat.
OOOOHHH! LET'S PLAY THAT! CAN WE PLAY THAT? PLEASE MRS BARHAM??
I, of course, have no idea what they're talking about.
Then a kid gets up and starts to wiggle around. Obviously the "that" they're referring to comes with it's own dance.
Half the band scurries around trying to figure out the notes on thier instruments to play it for me. The other half keeps doing these strange wiggling movements in an effort to show me the dance.
Unfortunatley the bell rang and we were out of time.
Fortunately, I had enough information to play around on Google to figure out what they were so excited about.
If you come to a Doss Athletic Event this year, you will be sure to hear our new addition:
Apache by the Sugar Hill Gang. Also known as "Jump On It".
I guess this has been around a while as I found Carlton and the Fresh Prince doing the dance. And yup, that's the real dance.
You can't get this kind of fun in any other line of work.

Excellent! You will forever be known as the "cool" band teacher that allowed them to play the "cool" music :-)
By the way, do you think they know who Carlton is???
YES!!! I love it! By the way, I love your blog. It makes me happy and sad all at the same time. Happy because it's funny and I can just hear your voice thru it. Sad because it makes me miss home! Anyway...I love it!
Who ever heard of pep band before marching band anyway? That makes no since...MO
"i guess this has been around a while..." !?!?!?!?!? where WERE you during your childhood? oh bother.
i know we're not THAT old, but it originally came out in the 60s, with no dance.
will and i played this in pep band in high school all the darn time, but our mascot was the braves so i guess it fit.
Wow, Candy... you're right. I had to wikipedia ya just to make sure. This link gives the full history of the song, it's origination and the other groups that covered it.

DJ Spen.
Shan - I took a poll today, they DO know Carlton. Go figure?
Nicole - HEY!! I saw your blog - welcome to blogland :) If you can facebook you can definitely do a blog.
MO - We don't march. Only pep. Sorry.
Candy - Blame Papa. I was a sheltered child.
DJSpen - Look, my husband can fix toilets AND bust a move.
AND he knew about wikipedia. we must have taught him something that one night we let boys come to girlband.
So I had never heard of "Jump on IT" and had I seen the dance, I would not have recognized it either. I suppose I have joined the sheltered child group. I DO remember the electric slide and other dances performed often by the guard and drummers to various music in the band room.
I am happy to see your research for work is entertaining and makes kids happy.
I was sitting at our homecoming game Friday night when I heard something that sounded familiar. I said something to Tanya about all the cheerleaders and the band doing this movement. The light bulb came on. I've read somewhere about cool bands playing Jump On It. I have now officially had the experience!
