Dinner Diaries

Cereal Swaps:

When Easton was just starting finger foods, we (like every good parent) gave him plain Cheerios. As he got older, we stuck to that for as long as possible. But eventually he wanted the Frosted-Sugar-Loop-Pop Cereals so I tried for a compromise. I bought 2 tupperware cereal containers and began mixing cereals. One box of plain Cheerios mixed with one box of Honey Nut Cheerios = Cereal that still tasted sweet but was not out of control. Many years later, my kids think that everyone mixes their cereal. We eat mixed cereal during the week and they pick out one box of Frosted-Sugar-Loop-Pop to eat on Saturday mornings.

I've tried several different combinations. Some of them do not have a generic substitute so you have to coupon hunt to get the price down. If you have any combo ideas, please share them. I'm always looking for some new cereal concoction.

Plain Cheerios + Honey Nut Cheerios
Plain Cheerios + Any other flavor Cheerios
Corn Chex + Honey Nut Chex
Wheat Chex + Golden Grahams
Rice Krispies + Fruity Pebbles
Kix + Trix
Kix + Any other flavor round puff (cocoa puffs, peanut butter puffs)
Corn Flakes + Any Honey Bunches of Oats flavor
Bran Flakes + CRUNCHY Raisin Bran (this does not work with regular Raisin Bran)
Plain Shredded Wheat + Frosted Shredded Wheat (this one is the most visible, and they tend to only eat the frosted ones and leave the plain ones lying in the milk)

And just so you don't think I'm a mean horrible parent who tortures her children with mixed cereal while I eat Frosted-Sugar-Loop-Pop, I also have a cereal mix for myself.

Kashi Go Lean + Kashi Go Lean Crunch

And honestly, I like it best that way. The Go Lean Crunch by itself is too sweet and the Go Lean Plain by itself is too, well, plain.
