If pride comes before the fall...

Then I am in big trouble. I am so proud of myself right now I could bust.

Ladies and Gentlemen - I. MADE. PANTS.

And.....without weird raw unfinished seams on the insides. Woo-Hoo!

I've been eyeballing tutorials online about making pj pants and perhaps a simple skirt but I have not ventured into that world yet. But the other night I got an email from my brother-in-law asking if I would make a pair of karate pants for him. My first reaction was absolutely not are you crazy? But then I thought about it. Karate pants are just glorified pj pants. MAYBE, I could do that. (I tried to sound much more confident in my real response to him) But I told him about my lack of a serger and thought that he would bail on the whole plan. No, no. He doesn't care if he has weird scraggly seams on the insides. Great. So off to the world of the internet to figure out the best tutorial for making pants. But after using a few magic google words I came across something called the "flat fell seam". Glorious. This gives a finished inside AND outside. Without a serger. (Because you know back in the day they didn't have sergers and had to do this stuff by hand and still managed a finished seam, duh)

So off to the fabric store to find something on clearance so I can practice a few pairs of pants on myself before I make them for someone else.

And it worked. I still can't believe it. They even fit. Really. It's crazy. I already warned Spencer that if I pulled this off that we're all getting matching flannel pj pants to wear on Christmas morning.

Here is the famous flat fell seam - outside view. Looks like the seam that comes on your jeans.

Here is the inside view of the seam (and a random thread over there on the left - need to clip him)

And here are the pants FITTING me.
And here is a very happy me at 10:30 last night when I finished the pants.

John - I promise not to put decorative stripey trim on the bottom of your karate pants.

Jenny, these are CRAZY cute! And the hem....I don't get giddy over sewing stuff like you, but those hems are awesome! GREAT job!! I bet you're already looking for matching Christmas PJ sets! I know I would be!!! :-)

Forgot to ask, what does the waist band look like?!?!

Elastic waist band. It was either that or drawstring and I actually had elastic so I went for that.
