Science Fair

You may remember last year when the Science Fair rolled around. I never made it to "crazy science fair mom" status, but we participated and had a good time. This year I asked Easton if he wanted to participate and he gave me that, "duh, of course" look. (Does he even know it's optional?) Anyway, we were in.

Our project involved cupcakes. We tested the claims that artificial sugars Splenda and Truvia tasted "just like real sugar". We made 3 batches of cupcakes using one of each type of sugar (real, Splenda, Truvia). We created a questionnaire asking participants to choose which cupcake was made with real sugar - or they could choose that they could not tell a difference. We took questionnaires and cupcakes to church on a Sunday night and had no trouble finding 24 volunteers. Of the 24, 12 identified the sugar cupcakes as sugar, 7 chose Splenda as sugar and 5 chose Truvia as sugar. Even if they did not choose the sugar cupcake correctly - all agreed that they three examples tasted very different from one another. Interesting cooking note, the Truvia "acted" most like the sugar in the batter. Splenda made the batter take on more of a gummy or gelatinous texture. But in the end, Truvia was the "sweetest" tasting. Of the 5 participants that chose Truvia, 3 of them were small children (Easton's friends). The other 21 participants were adults or students over 16.

So...what did all this cupcake tasting get us?

THIRD PLACE!! Yay! Easton was in the P1 division (K-1st grade). Fourth graders are required to participated and all other grades are optional. Here is our proud winner.

Mom, can I take a picture doing anything I want? Sure.

Now a real smile for Mom.
And the BEST, most AWESOME principal in the entire world. I love this woman. Almost as much as I love our pediatrician.
Other random pictures of Science fair winners. Some are from our division and some from the older divisions.

OK, I will let you get away with the “cupcake tasting thing” this year but next year he must test the viscosity of motor oil in internal combustion engines or carbide tipped saw blades vs. regular blades or how long a frog can hold its breath underwater or how many spark plugs you can take out of your car and still make it run or how far you can hit a golf ball with a baseball bat or how far a grasshopper can jump with just one leg or ANYTHING BUT CUPCAKES! :)

Easton - Way to Go, You Da Man!!
