My new sewing room (sort of)

**Blogger has changed the way that it adds pictures. Whatever I have done to format the post is changed when I hit publish so text/pictures don't necessarily match up. Just try to follow along until I figure out how to deal with this new system**

If you have ever been to my house then you know there is no space to make an actual sewing "room". It is a basic 3 bedroom ranch. The bedrooms are small and overall house size is average - but the kitchen is HUGE! It is our kitchen, dining room, office, art space, playdough area, racecar track, and now... sewing room! For a while now, I've had my table and sewing machine stuck over there in the corner next to the china. Finally I rearranged the shelves so that two of them were devoted to sewing things and just accepted the idea that the table/sewing machine was not temporary. If it's going to be there, I might as well make the area functional. If we ever have very important company or a huge party I can take it down, but if you are the average family or friend then it stays put.

Here is my corner - and my wonderful sewing machine. Six months later I still love this machine. I keep waiting for buyer's remorse, but it just hasn't happened yet.

Here are the two shelves that I dedicated for myself. In theory, they will be a place to hold current projects and little supplies that are always needed.

Downstairs I had all of my fabric and notions housed in plastic carts in the basement. Spencer agreed to let me take over the hall closet and make it sewing storage. Hooray! In a perfect world, it all would have fit, but some things still have to stay in the basement. I was amazed at how much fabric stuff I actually have. Don't get me wrong - I want more. But glad that I can see it now!
Here is the door of the closet holding buttons, zippers, elastic, etc.

The top of the closet has a bin for stuffing and batting. The middle of the closet holds cotton fabrics, fabric scraps, fat quarters, etc. The very bottom has vintage sheets (aka, Big Granny's sheets) decorator weight fabrics and scraps.

Even though I still have to use the basement space, it is much neater and organized down there. Before, fabric was spilling out everywhere. Now, everything has a home and there are empty drawers to spare.
Bins:

Fuzzy things: Fleece, flannel, etc.

Garment materials:

Christmas prints:

Now if you'll excuse me - I have an Amy Butler Weekender Bag to sew.

Why were you never this neet and organized when you were a teenager living at home?

I would gladly have bought you a sewing machine if I had only known. :)
