I stand corrected

Tuesday was Easton's first day of school. And Tuesday was also Easton's first night of homework. We were told during parent orientation to expect homework EVERY night except Fridays so I was ready. We had made the plan that Easton would do homework at the kitchen table while I prepared dinner. Of course Tuesday was a zoo but I made sure that Easton and I sat down together and did our first homework perfectly.

His assignment instructed that he find (or draw) 2 "A" pictures. We got out the magazines and I was very proud that Easton found the "A" items all by himself and cut them out with his scissors. Wanting to make a good impression on his teacher I made sure that his A's (obviously the focus of this assignment) were nice and tall and the point went all the way up to the top of the lined paper. I was also proud that his other letters were nice and tall and the middle hit that middle dotted line as they should.

Last night I looked in Easton's backpack and found that she had "graded" and returned his Tuesday homework.

WHAT??????? LOWER CASE?????? WHO USES LOWER CASE LETTERS????? WHAT 5 YEAR OLD KNOWS HOW TO MAKE UPPER AND LOWER CASE LETTERS???

From now on, I guess Easton does.

For the record, Easton was not phased one bit by the red ink on his paper. It is only his mother who got herself in a tizzy.

You know, I have had this question for a long time.....do I teach Andrew to write ANDREW or Andrew or andrew? I settled on Andrew but with no direction. Then, I questioned myself as to what to call the big and little letters? Upper case? Lower case? BLAH! Who knows. Glad it didn't bother Easton. Just something else for his quick absorbing brain to soak up :-)
There's some "fad" in education that I recently heard that they do not allow red ink in the schools.....maybe more for the parents than the kids in this case :-)
Tell Easton I give him extra credit for picking out his own pictures!! AND, for writing the words as he did :-)

I hope this doesn't do serious damage to his GPA. There is a lot of competition for college scholarships these days. :)

it seems like tiana wrote all lowercase in K and 1st grade (except her name and whatnot) but she went to school in the ghetto so it's really no judge of what should or should not be. i can't believe the teacher corrected the letters in his name on the first day of school. although if you're going to have standards guess you might as well have them from the start. congrats on getting into a traditional elementary school! :)

NOT FAIR! The directions do not state that you are suppose to write in ALL lowever case, combo of or ALL upper case. I think the upper case letters he wrote are VERY impressive! I can understand "red inking" his name, but not perfert upper case letters!

My heart ached for you as I read your story. I am glad Easton was not upset and took the experience as a learning opportunity. A positive outlook will truly help him go much further than being perfect. I am proud of you both!

All of you are wrong, and so is the teacher. The directions at the top of the page clearly state that Easton was to find two "Aa" pictures. I can only think of two options: a photo of a person named Aaron, or an aardvark who is beginning a sentence.

Get with it, people. Accountability starts with us!

The above comment that was deleted came from me, too. It had a typographical error, and it just had to go.

It occurred to me this morning that perhaps another option would be a picture of somebody drinking a refreshing beverage and saying, "Aaaaah!" But then I realized that was not a good idea. It would be the same as taking a photo of somebody saying, "Aardvark," which makes no sense at all.
